We’re letting you in on one of our best secrets. The views from atop the Hayfork Bally are some of the best in the world. It can be hiked to or driven (with a fairly sturdy car), but remains remote enough for you to experience the grandeur of this vista in peaceful solitude. Visitors can take in 360 degree views of the Trinity Alps, the South Fork Trinity River Valley, Hayfork Valley and even faraway Mount Shasta. Depending on the time of day, and your luck, you’re likely to be looking down on birds of prey, spotting black bears, walking past precocious spotted owls and more.
The Bally is reachable by a few different hiking and driving trails, which vary by difficulty and accessibility. The most common and best driving route is take Big Creek Drive, which is about a 45 minute trip from town and still requires a 4x4 vehicle. If you want to hoof it, you can try the Lucky Trail, Bear Creek Trail, Pattison Peak Trail and Knowles Gulch Trail.
